Basilisa: An Exquisite Armoire Showcasing Filipino Weaving

A Functional and Decorative Piece Inspired by Tradition

When I was young, I remembered how my grandmother Basilisa could easily repair a dining chair with Solihiya weave. I watched her, amazed at how she could create the intricate pattern. The wooden lattice patterns used in old houses in my hometown served as the inspiration to frame the solihiya. I also realized that this weaving is very Filipino and a part of our culture that must be appreciated by everyone.

The Basilisa armoire, designed by Ito Kish, showcases the solihiya using rattan - an intricate weave that adds to its aesthetic drama. Each weave showcases a different pattern but unites through the exquisite play of light, pattern, and shadow. It is this chiaroscuro that makes the Basilisa a Filipino beauty to behold.

The armoire features the solihiya patterns that exhibit the exquisiteness of our culture, with shapes that give it a modern look. Kish incorporated five types of weaves familiar in different parts of the Philippines, creating a piece that celebrates our heritage.

All the materials used in the Basilisa armoire have been sourced from sustainable means of production. The kiln-dried mahogany, a fast-growing hardwood, and the rattan are farmed and sourced locally in the Philippines. The weaving was done by artisans in small neighborhoods, providing them with livelihood.

The Basilisa armoire measures 901.7 mm x 609.6 mm x 1905 mm, making it a versatile and functional piece for any living space.

The design of the Basilisa armoire posed several challenges. Identifying the weaves that could work together and finding skilled artisans who could create the solihiya patterns were significant hurdles. The solihiya is deeply ingrained in our everyday life, and Kish wanted to honor its importance. Additionally, extensive research was conducted on lattice patterns found in old demolished colonial houses to ensure the use of something deeply rooted in our culture and history.

The Basilisa armoire is a testament to the beauty and craftsmanship of Filipino weaving. It showcases the solihiya in a contemporary and functional way, preserving our cultural heritage while adding a touch of modern elegance to any space.

This design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Basilisa armoire stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
